We were fishing at the OCP this weekend and saw some folks fishing with a cork. I have since learned they were using a popper cork and a finger mullet attempting to catch spanish.
What type of leader do you use for this, how to attach the cork, any other information for this method of fishing since I have never done it?
I heard today that someone caught a 20# king doing this on Sunday after we had left LOL.

The method is refered to as a live lining float rig. Its a cross between a " weighted float " rig used for trout fishing and the familar " carolina rig " used for flounder fishing. The sliding float is applied to the terminal line (the line spooled on your reel) above a single black swivel. No additional lead weights are used ( on a carolina rig a barrel weight is used above the swivel with/or with a float and the weight free slides). The final part of the equation is the terminal leader ( generally 12-14" of 20-40 lb test) mono to which a single saltwater x/strong trebble hook is sneeled and tied onto the swivel. Boat fishers who fear the repeated lose of such rigging may use a "Malin wire "( tooth proof single stranded stainless) leader in place of the mono terminal end of this style rigging. Generally pier fishers do not. The bait minnow is simply back hooked near the upper dorsil fin.
The angler who applied this method most recently and decked a 18 + lb King Mackerel Sunday Oct 7th is Mike Reese. The photo of his likeness and his catch may be found inside the OCP Picture Gallery/ "Catches from the Planks".
We will be back down in about 2 weeks and maybee you can give me a little hands on with this. I have been a bottom fisherman only in the past and look forward to learning some other methods of fishing so when the bottom fish arent biting I have an alternative.
Our group has fished alot of piers in the past years (10 -15) and we think we have now found a permanent home . Your staff was great and we had a blast last weekend. The folks we encountered while on the planks were equal if not greater than your staff which says alot .
Call in the spots the last weekend of October!
