do OCP anglers often traget cobia or are they and accidental but welcomed catch? a cobia is the fish i most look forward to catching and tho many ppl have told me how to target them it usually involves a boat. and since i dont live near the coast ("YET") i dont have easy access to one. i noticed that OCP lands an unusualy large number of cobia each year and was wondering if you target them how? i hear alot about useing eel, and tho i have caught 3 or 4 in my pier fishing days they seem pretty hard to come by, any onther suggestions that you think work well?

Justin, Ling Fish aka " Cobia " are an annual favorite among large specie fishers here. They are a cautious species with an insatable appetite. Targeting them from a pier varies greatly from technics used while boat fishing or open water sight cast fishing. These fish are generally among the first which transverse the OKI beachline each season late April and Early May. They preference live baits over artificle plugs and lures inshore. These fish often shade in the comfort of the pier shadows and its possible adding them to your caught list using a live eel while bottom fishing. Top water bait presentation though is the preference from the pier Tee. Many large examples have been caught during our annual "Rebel King Mackerel" held during the first week-end in May these past seasons. King Mackerel generally follow on their footsteps. Cobia remain visitors along our beachline each year until late summer as pods of Menhaden aka "Poggies" travel the shoreline Southwards from the mouth of the Southern Cape Fear. These baitfishes are abundant and a local favorite in the diet of the Cobia's, King Mackerel, and Tarpon available to anglers from our pier. In addition Cobia preference "Jimmy sized" Bluefish over any other bait if menhaden thin or disappear from the area. Tee fishers generally use the same terminal wire rigging and hooks while targeting King Mackerel as they do for Cobia. I would suggest spooling your largest line capacity fighting reel with a minimun test rated line of at least 40 lb's if increasing the odds of a successful Cobia landing is among your game plans. Cobia are powerful longwinded fighters to say the least and remember only the shadow knows for sure what Mother nature may have plans on providing you on the ends of your hooks..............Dave OCP/LLC.
