Welcome to NC's Favorite Fishing Pier's website! Many North Carolina angling families refer to us as their "Fishing Home Away from Home" and thats also true of those spending time here in cyber space! The Ocean Crest Pier website was designed with you in mind. Its updated regularly so that our reports and photo's represent the "Newest" and most informative exciting day-to-day happenings. We're striving to invest in the lastest technoligies making sure our webpages reflect the needs of the customers.

The begining of the 2009 Fishing season is upon us here at Ocean Crest and we're hoping your prepared. The anglers visiting here over these past seasons have had successful catches from among the many species of fishes available from the resources here. Included among those are dozens of Beautiful King Mackerel, Speckled Trout, Flounder and many of the favored bottom fishes including some very nice Atlantic Pompano and Whiting aka Virgina Mullet. Ocean Crest Pier recognizes the ever changing economy and how they effect coastal salt water anglers. These changes have put new faces on old traditions and a way of life. We realize too how these issues bare upon the many generations of North Carolina's fishing families as well individual salt water sportsman. It's obvious that lots of familar North Carolina's coastal fishing piers have gone with the tides of change never to return.

We're proud we've weathered the continuing down turns in the economic climate encroaching our North Carolina coastal towns and cities here at Ocean Crest Pier.

Many folks have asked and yes, it is true that Ocean Crest Pier is the last fully operational privately owned fishing pier here on Oak Island. It is also one of the fewer than a dozen or so piers in North Carolina in operation at all under private ownership and traditional operations which favor anglers successes first over the bottom line. Much like yourselves we're an angling family here and we know all too well the importance of having knowledged based information. This information has become a mainstay which sets us a mile a part from other coastal North Carolina Pier businesses. The in's & out's of fishing are important to our patrons in the same fashion they are to us. It helps fishers catch more of their favorite fishes. Our goals here always reflect upon those of our patrons. Its a simple formula of success. One we'll continue praticing as we move further into the new year.

Its imperitive to the Ocean Crest Pier orginazation your time spent here is a positive experence. One worth repeating. It is with-out doubt the foundation of our success story here. Please Visit here often and if you do it will surely motivate your Visiting the Deck of the Pier! We're honored having all the Wonderful opportunites meeting you and it's fantasic having you bring your families and friends and making them a part of the excitement too, as well a part of our extended Ocean Crest Pier family. We realize the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities. If we have at the end of the day we can all proudly say..........We've all have had a successful day here.

We're Prouder than ever saying "We're staying put", and prouder knowing we'll be here during 2009 serving your families who pick us as their final angling destination. Please take the time to visit our message boards, post your comments, and share those fishing secrets and suggestions, or simply visit the boards just to say hello!

MARINE FISHERIES RELEASES 2008 LANDINGS REPORT
FishingContact: Patricia Smith Date: May 4, 2009 Phone: (252) 726-7021 MARINE FISHERIES RELEASES 2008 LANDINGS REPORT MOREHEAD CITY – North Carolina commercial seafood landings rose by 13 percent in 2008, bolstered by the best hard blue crab harvest since 2003. The increase ends a previous five-year decline for the state’s seafood industry. Of the 71.2 million pounds of seafood sold to dealers last year, nearly half, or 32.9 million pounds, were hard blue crabs, according to the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries’ Trip Ticket Program. Hard crabs also contributed $25 million to the $87 million total dockside value of seafood in 2008, a $4 million increase from the 2007 total. “Although crab pot trips were down from last year, the winter crab trawl fishery was very good, contributing to the increased landings of hard blue crabs compared to 2007,” said Alan Bianchi, the state Division of Marine Fisheries’ Commercial Statistics program manager. The 57 percent increase in blue crab harvest contributed to a 34 percent increase in overall shellfish landings, which also saw steady shrimp catches. The shrimp harvest declined by 1 percent, but the landings were still 64 percent higher than the previous five-year average. “In the shrimp fishery, the high fuel prices during the fall likely led to the decline in the number of shrimp and skimmer trawl trips in 2008,” Bianchi said. Oyster harvest increased by 5 percent, as well, from 83,446 bushels to 88,008 bushels. Commercial finfish landings, however, fell by 9 percent to 27.6 million pounds. This included a 59 percent drop in yellowfin tuna harvests, a 30 percent drop in swordfish harvests and a 17 percent drop in bluefish harvests. Conversely, there was a significant increase in tilefish landings, which were the highest on record at 404,295 pounds. Triggerfish landings also increased by 28 percent. Likewise, the recreational fishing sector saw declines in finfish harvests in 2008. The number of recreational finfish caught dropped about 18 percent to 12 million while the number of recreational fishing trips remained roughly the same, at 7 million, according to North Carolina Marine Recreational Fishery Statistics Survey estimates. --More-- 2 “There was a decline in for-hire and private boat trips, but an increase in shore and pier fishing,” said Doug Mumford, the state Division of Marine Fisheries’ recreational statistics program manager. “It appears the high fuel prices and other economic factors may have influenced fishermen to choose the piers, with blanket fishing licenses, over their boats.” Dolphinfish remained the top recreational species with 3.6 million pounds (405,784 fish) caught, followed by groupers at 1.2 million pounds (99,468 fish), bluefish at 1 million pounds (1.3 million fish), striped bass at 921,051 pounds ( 44,006 fish) and spotted seatrout at 911,097 pounds (576,703 fish). A full report of landings statistics can be found in the division’s Annual Fisheries Bulletin at http://www.ncdmf.net/download/2008AnnualNCFisheriesBulletin.pdf. For more information on commercial landings, contact Bianchi at (252) 808-8092 or Alan.Bianchi@ncdenr.gov. For more information on recreational landings, contact Mumford at (252) 948-3876 or Doug.Mumford@ncdenr.gov.

North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License The North Carolina’s Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL) requirement for all salt water anglers 16 years of age and older, administered by the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), was effective beginning Jan. 1, 2007. This license can be purchased on a 10-day, annual or lifetime basis, or combined with a variety of licenses issued by the Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC). Sales Agents The new license is available from WRC license agents throughout the state and at any DMF office. The number of license agents will be increased in coastal areas. Requirements The license allows recreational fishermen to take finfish for personal consumption; finfish harvested under this license cannot be sold. Fishermen using this license are held to the state’s recreational size and possession limits. The license cannot be assigned or transferred and is required for ANY type of recreational finfish taken not included under the Recreational Commercial Gear License. Fishermen holding the CRFL are required to comply with all DMF sampling and survey programs. The license is required to recreationally take finfish in the state’s Coastal Fishing Waters, which include sounds, coastal rivers and their tributaries, out to three miles in the ocean. Recreational anglers who catch fish in the Exclusive Economic Zone (3 miles – 200 miles offshore) will be required to have this license to land fish in state waters. Fishing in Joint Waters (areas managed by both the Marine Fisheries and the Wildlife Resources commissions) will require either the CRFL or a WRC inland fishing license. Exemptions Individuals under 16 years of age. Individuals who had purchased any of the following WRC licenses prior to Jan. 1, 2006: · All categories of Lifetime Sportsman licenses; · Lifetime Resident Comprehensive Fishing License; · Lifetime Combination Hunting and Fishing License for Disabled Resident Sportsman; · Disabled Resident Sportsman; · Lifetime Fishing License for the Legally Blind; and · Adult Care Home Resident Fishing License. This block of licenses costs $150 and is available to owners of private vessels, or the responsible party of a business owned vessel. The boat must be 23 feet or more in length and either registered in North Carolina or do*****ented with the U.S. Coast Guard. These licenses cannot be used aboard a vessel licensed for, or engaged in, for hire (charter) fishing. There is no limit on how many blocks of licenses an individual can purchase. The licenses are not transferable or assignable – they must be used on the vessel for which they were issued. Each license, once issued and expired, must be returned to the Division in a postage paid envelope provided with each license. Each block of licenses is valid for two years from date of purchase. Blocks of 10 Ten-Day Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses are only available from the Division of Marine Fisheries license offices or by mail. Blanket Licenses For-hire vessels and ocean fishing piers have the option to purchase a blanket license to cover their fishing patrons. When purchasing a Blanket License, vessel operators must provide a copy of the U. S. Coast Guard license that allows taking people for-hire. Please Note: Blanket Licenses are ONLY available at DMF offices Waivers A free license waiver is available for subsistence anglers from their local Department of Social Services.
